Got your free essential oils for beginner's guide all downloaded? Great, now let's chat about getting started with essential oils from this busy mom's perspective.

1- What are Essential Oils

To this momma, they are some major Oily goodness. The source of my super mom powers, the reason my house stays semi-clean and the helper to keeping my family healthy.

To others…

Essential Oils are liquids created typically from the distillation of shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. This liquid is highly concentrated, aromatic and consists of chemical compounds. Depending on the Chemical compounds the Essential Oil can have varying effects.

2- How to use them

Well if you are like me you use them for EVERYTHING.

Now I didn’t start out this way.

In fact, I was quite the eye-rolling skeptic. I totally thought essential oils were bogus.  Until I broke down and tried them and saw amazing changes in my family’s wellness. Plus my house started smelling so amazing and clean.

And my biggest surprise, I was even saving money by creating DIY products to replace my typical store-bought stuff. I was winning at being super mom with something I totally thought was all hype.

You can use Essential Oils three ways-  Aromatically, Topically or Dietary.

Diffusing Essential Oils

The easiest way I think to use essential oils for beginners is Aromatically. Most people have heard of Essential Oil Diffusers. There are recipes all over Pinterest and my site with Essential Oil diffuser recipes.

Using an Essential Oil diffuser is a simple way to just breathe in the essential oils. This is one of my favorite ways to use Essential Oils for beginners because it’s simple, quick and easy. Plus you get the extra benefit of your house smelling amazing.

Another popular way to diffuse essential oils is by wearing Diffuser Necklaces and bracelets. I have a favorite diffuser bracelet I wear all the time. It’s now the subject of one of my most popular posts. How to make a diffuser bracelet in 5 minutes.

Most people when starting out using essential oils will use oils with diffusing until they get comfortable. Then they move on to the other two methods, topically and internally.

Applying Essential Oils to Skin

Topically is another easy way to use essential oils for beginners. My favorite way to apply oils topically is by using rollerballs. This is a glass container with a roller type top that has essential oil and carrier oil mixed.

Never made an Essential Oil Roller? Check out this super short video where I show you how I make my favorite roller Called the Daily Roller. (you can find the post about it HERE) Bonus to watching this video? You get to see the quirky fun side of me 🙂

Carrier oils are oils such as Grapeseed, coconut, or other vegetable oils that are used to dilute the essential oil. Dilution is very important, especially when applying to children and to people who are new to using oils. Diluting Essential Oils for beginners can be intimidating. Don’t worry I have a free safety sheet you can download here to help you with dilution. I also typically coach and help my new kit owners with dilution until they feel comfortable.

Dietary Essential Oils

This is simply using essential oils internally by ingesting essential oils using water, vegetable capsules or food to ingest the oils.

Ingesting Essential Oils can be a very touchy subject as there are many different views on the subject.

My suggestion is to do your research on ingesting Essential Oils and decided what you are personally comfortable with.

Use that mom's intuition and follow what is best for your family.

I want to stress that not all oils are ingestible and some can be downright dangerous if ingested. If you decided to ingest oils please only ingest oils that are labeled for ingestion.

3- Which Company to buy from

If you have been researching using Essential Oils I imagine you have run across dozens of posts discussing who is better to buy from.

Essential Oils have started to gain in popularity you can find them just about anywhere.

I’ve seen them in the drug store, Walmart, Amazon, Whole Foods, smaller online stores and I’ve seen them sold by friends who are apart of different MLMs.

Depending on who you talk to you will get different answers on who you should buy from. And believe me, people will jump on certain sides of this argument and throw stones pretty quickly.

All I can tell you is why I chose the brand I did. We are all smart mommas and I believe in researching what I can and then I following my momma's gut. It has never lead me wrong.

How to pick where to buy Essential oils from

First, you need to decide how you plan on using Essential Oils-

Are you going to use them just to make your house smell good?

If so, then a cheaper brand found locally or online might just suit your needs.

Yes, I just said that.

There is probably little difference in performance in how the cheaper oil and say some air freshener you plugin or spray will perform. I say this because you are shopping for what smells good not for therapeutic results. Buying with cost in mind is the logical thing to do here.

Usually, when Moms go this route I get the comment.

“I don’t see what the big deal with essential oils is. I diffuse and my house smells good but that is it.”

My answer is because you are not diffusing the right quality of oils for a therapeutic effect.

Not all Essential oils are created equal.

If you think you would use Essential Oils not only to make your house smell great but use Essential Oils in ways that could be therapeutic. (Such as making a roller that helps keep your family happy and healthy, or using Essential Oils to help clean your home.) Then you need Essential Oils of guaranteed quality and purity.

The cheaper stuff won't do the job.

For example, a motorcycle is a great economical way to get around. It will get me where I need to go. But if safety is my main concern, I may want to put my family in a Mercedes because Mercedes is rated the safest car in 2017. Yes, there is a price difference but if safety is my major concern I’m going to go with the vehicle that makes me feel the safest. It’s the same with oils.

So how do you know which company is the safest?

Most Essential Oil labels will say “Therapeutic Oil” or “Pure” on the label.

You just gotta love Marketing and Labeling.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a regulating body for this so companies can put basically whatever they want on the label unless they want to label it for ingestion then enters the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration).

How do you know if the essential oils you want to use are safe? Checking for safety is where being a diligent momma comes into play.

  • Ask the company you are thinking of using where they get their oils.
  • How do they distill their oils and are they tested for purity?
  • Do they add other ingredients to the bottles or are they straight oils?
  • Can their oils be applied topically or ingested?

Asking these questions can take some legwork.

By now if you have been on my site awhile you probably can see I sell essential oils for Young Living and I want to share some of the reasons I chose to use them.

Why I chose Young Living Essential Oils

Mainly I followed my momma instincts. I just knew Young Living was the right fit for me.

But here is some of the information I used to decide.

  1. They actually own or partner with the farms the essential oils they sell come from. Young Living has complete control over the oils from seed to seal on every farm. I like the fact that the oils were distilled and bottled on the farms and that if I ever want to visit a farm and see the process they welcome it. Watch out cypress and frankincense farms in Australia, I’m coming for a visit.
  2. Farms are picked by researching where the plant grows best and produces the best therapeutic benefit. A plant variety is chosen for the best therapeutic benefit. Yep, you guessed it all lavender plants are not created equal. And Young Living knows this and they grow the right variety in the right soil so my family gets the best benefits for the oil. I have a degree in agriculture and I’m a certified master gardener this so makes my heart happy to know this.
  3. When I buy essential oils from Young Living I’m helping another mom build her Essential Oil business and not giving my money to a big box store. Buying my premium starter kit also gave me the option to build my own business which I decided to do. (You never have to sell oils, the choice is purely up to you. I made the personal decision to sell and I’m so glad I did.)
  4. When I bought my Young Living oils from my enroller. I had a built-in Educator and network to help me learn how to safely use oil. (This option depends on your enroller. I’m big on educating the people I sell premium starter kits too. I want to empower them to use oils and use them safely. Not all Enrollers are the same. So chose your enroller wisely.)
  5. As much as I like to research, I really wanted a company I could trust. Like seriously trust. I don’t have time to waste researching and nitpicking every product I want to buy. I’ve got babies to feed and errands to run, my life is busy, just like yours. As my love of Essential Oils has grown and my interest in creating a toxin-free lifestyle for my family has become a high priority, I’m so glad I can turn to one company and see that they want the same thing I do. Healthy products for my family. They have become more than an essential oil company for me. They are my partner in a healthy lifestyle. With their line of cleaning products, supplements, personal care products (like shampoo and body soaps) it’s one-stop shopping. Oh Shopping, when I’m kid-free I love it. As long as it’s not bathing suit shopping, let’s not go down that rabbit hole. Anyway, most days I’ve got my kiddos in tow so online shopping is now my JAM.

Do any of my reasons for choosing Young Living make you feel better about the prospect of buying oils?

I’ve now given you food for thought on what Essential Oils are, how to use them and what brand to buy. Let’s now talk about which oils are good to start out with and what other tools you may need to use Essential Oils as a beginner.

5- Beginners tools you will need to get started

Diffusers

I personally love the Young Living diffusers because they come with a one year warranty and they take a licking and keep on working. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dropped mine and it still works now two years later.

Some Features of my favorite diffusers are-

  • A light that can act as a night light or be turned off
  • Intermittent setting ie. 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off
  • Remote control- to turn off and on from the bed, Cause sometimes this momma is too tired to get out of bed. Plus many have a run timer button so you can select how long you want the diffuser to run. Which is a nice feature if you want to go to sleep with it on but don't want it to run all night.
  • Can cover the square footage of the room. Most of my Young Living diffusers cover up to 300 square foot. I've noticed the ones I have from Amazon don't cover as much area.

The Young Living premium starter kit comes with your choice of a diffuser. If I had to pick one I would go with the Dewdrop. I like it because it's crazy quiet. A close second would be the home diffuser. It's a little louder, think great white noise and it has an intermittent setting. Both run between 3-4 hours. Get your Young Living Diffuser HEre

Here are two non-Young Living diffusers I own. The second one I use as a car diffuser. It has worked miracles on long trips.

Essential Oil Rollers

I use a mix of 5ml rollers and 10ml. I decide which one to use based on how much of the roller I think I will use and also for ease of carrying. If I want it to fit in my pocket I go with the 5ml. I've been loving these fun Gradient color roller bottles lately.

Glass Droppers

I personally prefer 2ounce amber glass droppers. Although I’m thinking about getting a larger one to store my carrier oil in.

Spray Bottles

I love spray bottles of all sizes. And this set has all the sizes you need!

iframe style="width:120px;height:240px;" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=as_ss_li_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=beginneroiler-20&language=en_US&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B07FC1KLV8&asins=B07FC1KLV8&linkId=ab7b51a9f4a7fbd01be43a7f77601ac3&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true">

Carrier Oils

This is the vegetable-based oil that you will mix your Essential Oil with to help with applying it topically to your skin. One of my favorite carrier oils is Jojoba. I probably use grapeseed the most. Just because I can buy it locally.

Gel Capsules

Most beginners don’t go the ingestion route at first. But here is what I use when I do ingest. remember that essential oils should never be placed in styrofoam or plastic cups. It's best to use a metal cup and metal straw.

Essential Oil for beginners Books and References

I like to purchase reference material that is made specifically for the brand of Essential Oil I use. My go-to reference books are.
