Essential oils for skin care that might just surprise you.

Can I just tell you how much I super duper love this DIY All Natural Essential Oil Face Serum Recipe??

As I get older I'm beginning to look for more products that can promote wellness and healthy happy skin. I'm also looking for products that are simple and not full of toxic chemicals.  I love this DIY Face Serum because I feel it does just that.

I MEAN IT, I LOVE IT and my 40+-year-old skin thanks me every single night for using an essential oil face serum recipe that works.

Are you ready to diminish the look of fine lines?

How about smooth the look of your skin?

Reduce the appearance of blemishes?

Support overall skin health?

Did you know that a face serum DIY can do all that?

Why I love this Essential Oil for Skin Care Face Serum Recipe

This Essential Oil Face Serum was one of the first DIY projects I did when learning how to use my Premium Essential Oil Kit from Young Living. I am so thankful I did.

One friend was just talking about how she bought a face serum from the department store. I will not name names but, she paid almost what I paid for my Premium Kit for just a little container of serum.

And what else other than reducing the look of wrinkles can that container do? Not one darn thing.

Girlfriend, I can diffuse beautiful smells, clean laundry and bake lemon cookies with what I got in my box. (more on those three in other posts here on my blog) Plus do all the amazing skin stuff I talked about above.

Hello, reducing the look of fine lines!! I'm seriously not ready to look old or my age.

So my frugal mind says, why buy a one-use container? When you can get a whole kit that has a ton of other uses and cost just about the same price. No brainer sister.

How I use the Essential Oil for beginners Face Serum Recipe

I apply this serum every night after I wash my face. I like to concentrate on any trouble spots.

  • Lightly shake the dropper bottle of essential oil face serum
  • Place about a dime to a nickel size amount in the palm of your hand and apply to face and neck.

I'd say the 2 oz bottle last me 3-4 months. Feel free to also use this on your hands and feet too!

Did you know there are 3 common mistakes you can make when creating a face oil that will make your face serum not work? I wonder if you are doing any of these face serum mistakes like I was.

Instructions for making the Essential Oil Face Serum Recipe

I mixed and stored my Essential Oil Face Serum in a 2 oz dropper bottle. It makes getting just the right amount out easy.

  1. Place all essential oils listed in the recipe in the below picture in the clean dropper bottle first.
  2. Add carrier oil of your choice to just below the neck of the bottle. This will leave room for the dropper to be added and there to be no overflow of oil.
  3. Shake lightly to mix the oils.

Now, that I've given you this fantastic easy to make Essential oil face serum recipe. Are you excited to give it a try?

I love that this recipe will allow you to make one simple change in your beauty routine that will have a huge impact on your skin.

How exciting is that?

Where to buy supplies for the Essential Oil Face Serum Recipe

My question now is, do you have the supplies that you need? To make this serum a reality in your life. If not, I'd love to help you gather those supplies together and make this happen!

I have only made this essential oil face serum recipe with YL essential oils which can be found in the premium starter kit. I can not say how other brands will work or not work. My suggestion is to go with Young Living because they have a seed to seal guarantee that all their oils are held up to.

Already own your oils but need the other supplies- Check out below what I use-

Love these dropper bottles! I make so many different Essential Oil items for my family that I can run through my stash of bottles pretty quickly at times!

As far as carrier oils I think these two are great options-

Jojoba oil – This is a great oil for acne prone skin.

Grapeseed oil- Fast obsorbing and for combination skin

First step to getting you all set up with Essential Oils –

Let's gets talking about the three oils. You can buy them separately, or if you are like me and want to save a whole lot of money, you can buy a Young Living Premium Starter kit like the one pictured below. That's a picture of my first ever kit!

image of wooden table with Young Living Premium Starter kit displayed with oils, diffuser and samples

All three oils in the Essential Oil Face Serum Recipe; Lemon, Lavender, and Frankincense, come in the Young Living Premium Starter kit. The Premium Starter Kit also comes with 8 other awesome oils and a diffuser of your choice will run you around $180 depending on which diffuser, where you live (tax) and the shipping you select.

Now hold on…

I know that $180 is a bit of shocker for some of you, I get it. But have you priced face serums lately? I have, and they run anywhere from $69- $90 for 1 oz. Like I said earlier, I'd rather invest my money in buying a product that allows me to easily create multiple nontoxic items to support my healthy lifestyle than buying a one-time 1 oz bottle.

Want a couple other beauty ideas to use these oils on. How about your eyelashes? Every woman dreams about long beautiful eyelashes, well Lavender is great for eyelash growth support. I could give you dozens of kit oil uses just for your beauty routine alone, and guess what, I will! When you purchase the Young Living Premium Starter Kit from me, I will send you an E-recipe book with over 100 Essential Oil recipes from beauty, cleaning your home to daily wellness. Hello! How often do you apply this?

Reply
Ruth April 1, 2016 - 4:17 pm

Hey Aubrey, In the winter when I wasn’t out in the sun much I applied in the morning after washing my face and then again at night after washing my face. Now that it is summer I will not apply in the morning due to sun exposure. Lemon oil exposed to sun can cause burns. Thanks for your question! Ruth

Hi Bobbie,
I do use it under my eyes but just be careful not to get it too close.

Could you use Coconut or Vitamin E oil as the carrier?

Reply

you can use coconut but not Vitamin E oil. Vitamin E oil is not considered a carrier oil.

Hi! I’m new to oils. How much should I use? Do I apply only to problem areas or all over? Thanks!

Reply
Ruth April 21, 2016 - 5:28 pm

Hi Kenna! I apply to my entire face. I do make sure that I rub in a little extra to my problem areas. For the few scars that I’m using this serum on I only apply to the scar itself. Let me know if you have any other questions. I am happy to answer them.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for the great questions.
For me I did not notice a difference when I used grapeseed. I now use grapeseed pretty much on all my mixes that are not solid. And yes, I use it in place of a moisturizer. Although, on days I feel like my skin is extra dry, I will add moisturizer on top. I don’t feel like it made my skin any extra oily.

I use it all the time under makeup. Now I do use the Young Living Savvy make up so I’m not sure how it will work with other makeup brands. I would test in a small area first to make sure the essential oils don’t react to a chemical found in other makeups. Let me know how it works! Ruth

Hi Ruth
I have oily skin and can break out with wrong oil. Is Almond oil and grapeseed oil good for oily skin?

Reply
Ruth June 9, 2016 - 1:49 pm

Hi Cathy, Both Grapeseed and Almond oil are low on the Comedogenic (acne causing) rating scale. Both are a 2 which is considered moderately low. To answer your question, I can’t honestly say if they will be okay for your skin. Some options that are 0 (will not clog pores) are Sunflower Oil, Hemp Oil and Safflower Oil. You may want to try one of those oils if you tend to break out easily. Thanks for the great question! let me know if you have any more, I’m happy to help!

Reply
Ruth June 22, 2016 - 4:04 pm

Hi Tiffany, I make and store this serum in a glass dropper bottle. I use it nightly. The way I apply is by putting about a nickle size into the palm of my hand. using my fingertips I apply by gently rubbing the oil on to my face and neck. Concentrating on any wrinkles or blemishes. If i think I need more I will just put more in my hand and apply. Any extra a just rub on to the tops of hy hands or neck. It is beginning to really make a difference on the tops of my hands now. I have switched to the summer serum and love it, recipe is here. https://www.byoilydesign.com/2016/05/15/best-natural-face-serum/

I read your article multiple times but didn’t see the ratio of oils. I make my own night serum but I am always looking to improve it. I use a base of camellia seed oil, grapeseed and sweet almond with a couple of droppers of rosehip seed oil. Then I add my essential oils of choice. Your ratios would sure help me to know if I’m on the right track! I’m fairly new to the all natural naked face truth with essential oils! Thanks so much in advance for any help you can bestow! ?

This may not apply to this situation, however redirect if need be.

What young living oils for dark skin spots. I have used Franinsence alone and with carrot seed and coconut oil. I think I may be allergic to one of them as my reaction is terribly itchy in that area, bumps and then pealing. Is this normal?

Thanks

Reply
Ruth December 8, 2016 - 6:24 pm

Hi Sue,
If the reaction really concerns you I would consult with a Dr. as I have no medical background, so I can not diagnose or treat issues. If it were me and I felt it was an allergic reaction, I would stop using the oils and allow my skin to heal. I wish I could be of more help but I must stay compliant with FDA rules in my response here on my blog. Can you address your concerns to your enroller? They should be able to direct you in what you could do.

Thanks,

So!.. I’ve been using the essential oil mix with almond oil and I LOVE it!! Just my personal experience though jobjoba has always made my skin feel dryer oddly enough?.. But the almond oil seems to have a rich and smoother texture and the moisturizing effect has been amazing since I’ve been using it ❤️.

For a 2% dilution in a 10ml bottle is about 3 drops each. So you can put 2 drops of each oil and be okay. Hope this helps! Ruth

I think with consistent use it has the potential help make your skin appear tighter and more youthful. YL also has a massage oil you may want to try called Cel-lite Magic- “Cel-Lite Magic™ Massage Oil tones and nourishes the skin with pure vegetable oils, vitamin E, and authentic essential oils. Grapefruit oil improves the appearance of skin texture, while Juniper oil helps cleanse.” from the YL website. hope this helps. Ruth

Once you follow the recipe instructions you can use this straight on your skin because it is diluted. Frankincense and Lavender can both be applied neat but I would use a carrier oil with lemon. Hope this helps!

I could do a small test of just the V6 carrier and see how that feels before you make it. But the V6 is an option for this.

Hi Jessica,
Great question! With the amount of oil this recipe calls for, I would stick with a glass bottle. Essential oils are highly concentrated and can break down plastic containers so glass is the safest option.
